Clothing fans, a large framed textile artwork inspired by the clothing cultures of the Japanese and British, with an intriguing appliqué embroidery twist. Kimono silk, combined with silk papers delicately add to the minimalistic style making this framed artwork perfect for any room in the home.
Clothing Fans explores British and Japanese clothing traditions; how they influence each other and how they may be interchanged. Taking a traditional 1960's style British dress and recreating it using kimono silks with Japanese Boro embroidery. Juxtaposed is the kimono created with delicate layers of appliqué fabrics predominantly used in British clothing detailed with traditional British embroidery techniques. The textured and raised effect of the Boro embroidery perfectly complements with the more simplistic nature of the English embroidery.
The clothes are placed onto silk paper fans created by combining delicate layers of silk fibres, referencing the Japanese way of displaying artwork on fans and is the inspiration for the title of the artwork. The background fabric is a genuine Japanese kimono silk chosen for the pattern and colours, browns, creams and blues, to perfectly complement the appliqué and embroidery. Framed in a bespoke frame.
