Boro'd Words, a conceptual artwork inspired by and exploring the history behind Boro Boro. A narrative piece created from naturally dyed vintage fabrics and threads, hand embroidered words that pique curiosity, leaving the viewer with a need to know more. The natural palette of creams and browns, alongside the frayed worn edges created a soothing effect like being wrapped in a soft woollen blanket.

Boro Boro is a Japanese embroidery repair method, born out of necessity due to devastating poverty. Fabrics were patched and hand stitched to ensure the life of textiles were lengthened. This inadvertently created layers of historical narrative.

The pieced and patched vintage fabrics give a delicate, unassuming background for the hand embroidered lines that gently mask the partially hidden Japanese and English words that narrate the Boro story. They are deliberately hard to discover, referencing how the Japanese became embarrassed of their poverty stricken years and sought to hide them, resulting in little Boro work remaining. The delicate and carefully placed hand embroidery stitches add raised and implied texture to the artwork, drawing the eye across the whole piece before it alights on some of the words.
