What is Silk Shading?

Silk shading is a hand embroidery technique, often referred to as painting with thread.

Like many embroidery techniques, its history stretches back over many centuries and it has evolved over time. Originally silk shading was worked using silk threads and often on silk fabrics. Over time the threads and fabrics used have changed and now almost any fabric and thread can be used. However, silk shading is recognised by how the threads are blended and used to create a painterly shading effect.

Many centuries ago, Silk Shading was used on clothing and other textiles including homewares and furnishings such as boxes. Embroidery was really valued and the more embroidery you had in your home the wealthier you were - it was a status symbol.

Silk Shading today is often used on framed pieces, cards, and other home décor and not so much on clothing.

Originally long and short satin stitches were used to create the embroidery, this is still often a prominent feature as this stitch really helps to bring in the shading element. Other stitches can include French knots, seed stitch and chain stitch.

The direction of the embroidery stitches matters a lot in silk shading. When you're primarily using one stitch there needs to be something to add definition and contrast. By embroidering different areas in different directions this is achieved, it can be subtle or quite obvious. The choice really comes down to how you want the final embroidery to look. I always advise people to look closely at what they're embroidering and see if there are any directional changes.
