Embroidery on Paper

The word Hello cut from white paper with embroidered lines in pink around the edge of the word which is shown in front of an old brick wall.

Embroidery on paper adds a unusual element to textile work and this can make it really stand out as a special piece of stitching. It's a good way to bring in precious keepsakes into your embroidery as well meaning.

Embroidery on paper is very similar to embroidery on fabric, with a few extra things to be aware of.

a piece of white paper with the word hello drawn and partially embroidered in a dark pink thread with the needle on top of the paper.

Transferring the design is not as easy as with fabric. You can use a light pencil line and remove it with a small eraser afterwards. You can also draw your design on to tissue paper, and then stitch through both the tissue paper and the paper you want to embroider on. Once your embroidery is finished you remove the tissue paper.

Once you take the needle through the paper the hole is made and permanent, unlike fabric. If you take the needle through in the wrong place you have to live with the hole it has made.

Embroidering on to paper works well with both hand and free motion embroidery.

If you try embroidering on to paper, or have done before, let me know in the comments - I always like looking at embroidery!
